Autumn is in the air. Warm days and cool nights signal the end of summer and the promise of crisp air to come. The trees are beginning to display their vibrant colors. Yes, this is my favorite time of year, and the favorite of many. Notice the words of autumn as described by the poet, Keats.
How beautiful the season is now–How fine the air. A temperate sharpness about it. Really, without joking, chaste weather–Dian skies–I never lik’d stubble fields so much as now–Aye better than the chilly green of the spring. Somehow a stubble plain looks warm–in the same way that some pictures look warm–this struck me so much in my Sunday’s walk that I composed upon it.” – Keats.
In many ways, autumn also represents the end of things. It is harvest time once again, signaling the end of the growing season and the rush to reap the bounty of our toil and labor. For the farmer, the fall harvest is perhaps his busiest time of year as he struggles to gather in the crops against the threat of weather and other obstacles.
Jesus often compared the Kingdom of God to that of a farmer or land owner gathering in the harvest. This was his way of reminding us that there will eventually come a time when the scattering of the seeds will be done…when the weeding and caring for the growing plants is finished. There is an end to the growing season, and when that time finally arrives, the harvest will be gathered.
There is both hope and a warning in this message. Our hope is in the knowledge that we will be part of that great harvest when Christ returns to claim us as Children of God. The warning is that our time is limited, and that there will be end to our potential growing season.
Each of us has been blessed with a certain amount of time on the face of this earth. The expectation is that we will mature and grow in the knowledge and Spirit of God, and that in doing so, we might help others to grow in Christ as well. My desire is that each of you blossom into the vibrant life that God has promised.
