Sometime ago I completed a Bible Word Study for one of my Course of Study classes. The class was on Evangelism and the word I chose to research was “joy”. We were to note how this word had changed from the Old to the New Testament, and to share how this word now has a deeper meaning for me and the church I serve.
In 1st Samuel, the Israelites danced and sang for joy when David returned victorious from battle with the Philistines. In 1st Kings, the people rejoiced with great joy when Solomon was crowned king. In 1st Chronicles, all of Israel celebrated with joy as the Ark of the Covenant was rescued and returned to its rightful place of worship. In Ezra and Nehemiah, the returning exiles reacted with great joy as the temple was rebuilt, the walls of Jerusalem were constructed, and the Laws of God were read to them.
The Psalms record many different celebrations of joy. There is the joy of living in companionship with God (Ps. 16), the joy of presenting an acceptable sacrifice to God (Ps. 27), finding joy in justice (Ps. 35), joy in praising God (Ps. 43) and the joy of God’s rule and provision. The Psalms are all about joy; joy in worship, joy in praise, joy in victory, and even joy in divine discipline.
In the New Testament, we find a new joy in the presence of Jesus Christ. In the Gospels we find joy in receiving the Good News, the joy of repentance, and joy in salvation. Here we find joy in the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
During the past few years, I have experienced great joy in serving the congregation here at Kingsley. I have found joy in preaching God’s word, joy in answered prayers, and joy in participating in a wonderful worship atmosphere. There is joy in a new birth or a wedding; joy celebrating our youth, and joy in serving the community.
Have you experienced real joy lately? Has serving God brought joy into your life? Psalm 16:11 tells us, “You (O God) have made known to me the path of life; you fill me with joy in your presence…”
