Welcome July! And as we usher in a new month, we look back at the past six months and wonder, what’s next? Nola and I join our church family in celebrating a couple important milestones in our lives this July. First, we just made the last payment on the mortgage and Kingsley UMC and after 17 years, this magnificent building is finally ours! We will be planning a mortgage burning ceremony and fellowship meal very soon.
Second, on July 8th, Nola and I will celebrate our 42nd wedding anniversary. Forty-two years with the same wife, in the same house. I’m sure one of us must be a saint to have survived that period of time in the same surroundings, and I’ll leave it to your imagination to figure out which one it is.
On July 4th we celebrate the nations 244th birthday. On July 4, 1776 this fledgling nation declared its independence from England, seeking freedom from oppression, freedom from taxation without representation, and seeking the freedom to decide their own destiny. Over the many years, many have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defending the freedoms we enjoy today. It is our duty and obligation to honor these heroes by honoring their memory.
Paid debts, anniversaries, celebrations of freedom… today we also worship and honor the God who paid our debt of sin. We celebrate the anniversary of accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior. We celebrate our freedom in Christ; freedom from sin and death, freedom to live throughout eternity in his love and care.
This July, I invite you to celebrate with us. Celebrate the debts that have been paid in full. Celebrate the cherished memories of years together. Celebrate your independence from sin and death through the loving sacrifice of a Savior who loves you unconditionally. Celebrate life!
