Lent. No, not the small balls of fuzz you find in your pockets. Lent. The time we spend preparing our hearts and minds for Easter. Lent. The forty day period between Ash Wednesday and Easter, when many of the faithful around the world resolve to set aside normal practices in order to contemplate the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior. Lent. What does Lent mean to you?
Lent is a forty-day season of preparation for the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. The season begins with Ash Wednesday, when the foreheads of Christians are marked with ashes as a reminder that we are all created from dust and to dust we shall return.
Lent can also be a reminder of the forty days Jesus spent in the desert prior to the beginning of his ministry here on earth. It was during this time that Jesus spent time in prayer and fasting, communing with his heavenly Father, and preparing himself for the path that he would follow. It was during this time also that Jesus was tempted by Satan, and overcame that temptation with the help and power of the Holy Spirit.
Lent is a time of stripping down to essentials, as each Christian focuses on his or her individual relationship to God. It is a time when Christians remember our baptisms, when Jesus washed away our sins, giving us newness of life to celebrate the triumph of Palm Sunday and the glory of Easter.
Lent still has meaning for Christians today. It is still a time to reacquaint ourselves with our Heavenly Father. Like Christ, we can accomplish this through the means of prayer and fasting, cleansing our bodies and our minds of those things that clutter our lives. By denying ourselves of the things we take for granted, we allow ourselves time to draw closer to God and His will for our lives.
Lent. Old fashioned? Out of date? Don’t have time? Rethink an old tradition. Return to God and seek your purpose. Reconnect with the Savior and pledge your willingness to his will for your life.
