The month of May has finally arrived, bringing warm weather and flowers. May is a busy month as we try to make up for time lost due to cold, wet weather; the lawn mowers are humming, the birds are singing, and children can be found playing out in their yards. Yes, May ushers in the promise of another busy summer.
One glance at the May calendar and you’ll know it’s going to be a busy month. The National Day of Prayer takes place on Thursday May 3rd. There will be a gathering of local pastors at the Van Wert County Courthouse at 12 noon. The nation unites in honoring mothers on May 13, Mother’s Day. What a wonderful opportunity to show our appreciation and love to the mothers who have committed their lives to make each of us the persons we are today.
The nation honors the sacrifices of our military men and women on May 28, Memorial Day. It is often said that ‘freedom isn’t free’ and it is only fitting that we show our respect to those heroes, both living and dead, who stand up for our rights and our way of life. They deserve honor, respect, and our prayers.
May is also a busy time for our children as the school year comes to a close for the summer. Students are preparing for final exams, and seniors are counting the hours until graduation. Parents all know there will be awards programs, and the senior baccalaureate, followed by the graduation ceremony and all the graduation parties that follow. Lincolnview Local and Van Wert City schools graduate on May 20, while Crestview Local and Spencerville Local graduate on May 27.
May is also a busy time from a church perspective. This year we celebrate the Ascension of Christ on May 10, when Jesus rose up into the heavens after his resurrection. At Ascension, we are impressed by the power of Christ and cannot help but acknowledge his divine power. His return to glory affirms his promise to ‘go and prepare a place for us’.
On May 20 the church celebrates Pentecost, the gift of the Holy Spirit given as a comforter and guide to the faithful. It is the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives that leads, guides and directs every aspect of our daily living. And on Sunday May 27 we celebrate Trinity Sunday.
May God’s presence in your lives enrich and encourage you during this wonderful month of May.
